A woman has been accused of assaulting her husband with a cane in a hospital room in New Zealand.
The woman is facing a number of charges including assault occasioning actual bodily harm and false imprisonment.
The couple, who have been identified as Christina and Mark, were admitted to Wellington Hospital on Friday after being diagnosed with pneumonia.
They were told they had a “possible infection”, according to the Canterbury District Health Board.
The health board said the woman, who was not named, was charged with assault occasioned actual bodily hurt and false detention.
The incident occurred at around 10:30am on Thursday.
An investigation into the matter has been launched.
It is alleged that the woman had been sitting on the bed when her husband went to the bathroom.
She is accused of hitting him with the cane.
A police spokesman said police were investigating the incident and were treating it as a domestic incident.
Police have been called to the woman’s home in the northern city of Dunedin.
The Health Board said the couple have been treated and released.
A spokeswoman said the health board was treating the incident as a possible domestic incident and had been making enquiries with the couple.
The case has been referred to the District Health Boards’ Domestic Violence Squad.
